About the movement.

The Black Chef Movement was inspired by protesters and Black and brown communities stepping up to fight social injustice. Disturbed by civil unrest and the unjust killing of Black and brown people, Executive Director and chef Rasheeda McCallum used her love of food and passion for justice to create the Black Chef Movement.

The movement works to create a network of Black and brown chefs together to provide healthy and nourishing meals to protesters and those on the frontlines of social justice. In just a short amount of time, BCM has grown to include nearly 100 volunteers and has fed thousands of protesters and families across New York City.

Our Mission

Black Chef Movement’s mission is to fuel the fight against injustice in our communities through the preparation and distribution of nutritious meals to the people on the frontlines of the movement.

Black Chef Movement aims to counter food injustice in Black and brown communities and shine a light on chefs of color. Unfortunately, Black and brown communities are often the center of food disparities and social injustice, with 22.5% of African-American households suffering from food insecurity, according to Move For Hunger. At BCM, we believe that food brings people together, and by cooking, preparing, and distributing nutritious food, we aim to nourish the souls and spirits of those on the frontlines of the revolution and help fight food disparities in our communities.

One of our long-term goals is for BCM to become an international movement. Currently, we aspire to establish a community kitchen space in our hometown of New York City that will provide communities of color access to healthy nutrient-rich foods through cooking lessons, nutrition classes, and free weekly food pantries. This space would serve as the Black Chef Movement hub for Black chefs to meet and collaborate.
